The primary mission of the Goleta Sanitary District is the treatment of waste water to remove solids and bacteria. The District not only conforms to strict governmental regulations, but exceeds them. Once the water is treated it is supplied to the Goleta Water District mostly for landscape irrigation. Treated water that is not used for landscape irrigation is discharged into the ocean about one mile offshore of Goleta Beach. Other treatment byproducts such as the removed solids are treated and distributed to the community as soil amendment at no cost to the user. Generated methane gas is reused to heat the treatment process and the District facilities. Recycled water and the other treatment byproducts are valuable reusable resources that are very beneficial to the community.
Recently, the District completed a major upgrade of their treatment facility which upgraded the level of treatment. The District continues to make improvements to its facilities and is looking further into energy recovery projects using the treatment process methane gas byproduct. They are currently in the process of further software and equipment upgrade.
Recycled water distribution is the responsibility of the Goleta Water District that has an entitlement of 3 million gallons per day under an agreement with Goleta Sanitary District. Only approximately half of it is being used.
The Goleta Sanitary District staff is highly trained and competent and their dedication to their work shows in our excellent quality of service.
